The LAP Minority Ad Hoc Committee
The LAP aims to successfully promote the utilization of services to minority lawyers within the legal community and to create an atmosphere of safety and trust for all lawyers accessing the LAP. The LAP Minority Ad Hoc Committee was established to reach out and provide support to minority attorneys, and to address issues and concerns that may be experienced by minority lawyers. The American Bar Association's Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity published a report in 2004 cited findings pertaining to minorities in the legal profession. The report entitled, "Miles to Go: Progress of Minorities in the Legal Profession" stated:
- Minority representation in the legal profession is significantly lower than in most other professions.
- Minority entry into the profession has slowed considerably since the 1980s and mid-1990s.
- The initial employment of minority lawyers still differs significantly from that of whites.
- Minorities remain grossly under-represented in top-level private sector jobs, such as law partner and corporate general counsel.
- Progress has been especially slow for minority women in the profession.
The LAP encourages minorities to fully use the resources of the profession and the LAP hopes to assist in the prevention of isolation by offering support. The LAP works with lawyers, judges, and law students of different genders and diverse racial and culture backgrounds; all of whom share a common goal - to promote health among lawyers in order to further the integrity of the legal profession.
