Call the staff member responsible for your county, any LAP staff member,
or any peer counselor volunteer if you need assistance.
Confidentiality
The LAP is entirely separate from the Disciplinary Department of the State Bar. Information received by the LAP concerning any lawyer seeking help or to whom assistance is offered is confidential. The confidentiality provided is that of the attorney-client privilege. See Rule 1.6 of the Revised Rules of Professional Conduct. If you call as the spouse, child, or friend of the lawyer you suspect may have a chemical dependency and/or mental health problem, your communication is also treated as confidential.
In order to assure this high degree of trust and confidence, the Lawyer Assistance Program is, by rule of the State Bar, which has been approved by order of the North Carolina Supreme Court, entirely separate from any ethics or disciplinary committee of the State Bar.
